Welcome to Straightfork Farm, home of high quality ARI registered huacaya alpacas in Southeast Ohio!
Our alpacas enjoy creekside pastures deep in Ohio's Wayne National Forest area, an area of rolling hills, dense woodland and a quieter way of life.
In 1998 Sam & Cathy Moore made a life-changing decision, quit their jobs and moved with their 2 sons, 2 dogs, 2 horses and a cat back to southeast Ohio to take over Sam's mother's real estate company so she could enjoy retirement.
They bought a 67 acre farm so their 2 riding horses would have ample room to roam and soon decided the farm needed something more. Less than a year later, the first 3 alpacas came to call Straightfork Farm home.
Since then, the farm has grown. More acreage was purchased, including a small guest house, pastures were expanded and barns were built. The alpaca herd has also grown and almost 9 years later numbers around 40. They are ably guarded from the local coyotes by a team of 2 Great Pyrenees dogs, destined to become lap dogs in their next life.
The Moores are very hands-on, from the daily care of the alpacas to 3-sided sheds and a barn built from trees harvested and milled right on the farm by Sam. With almost 200 acres to take care of and enjoy, there is always some chore needing to be done! Cathy takes care of the general animal husbandry and leaves chores requiring power tools and heavy equipment to Sam.
Cathy has learned to use the fiber harvested from their alpacas and spins it into beautiful soft yarns, from which she knits and weaves wonderful one-of-a-kind items. She has also been a judge for a couple of Hand-Crafter's Spin-Off competitions for the Alpaca Owner's and Breeder's Association and for the Ohio Alpaca Breeder's Associations. The Moores are members of both.
Keeping in mind the commercial alpaca fiber market that will some day exist, the Moores are primarily breeding for fine quality white and light colored fleeces, although the beauty of the many natural colors of alpaca hard to ignore! You will find huacayas of all colors quietly grazing the pastures at Straightfork Farm.
At Straightfork Farm, we really believe in our after-the-sale-support. We want our clients to be happy, successful alpaca owners and we want them to be out friends. We will assist in any way we can in helping you as a new owner, whether it is in teaching you to give your alpacas their vaccinations, to shear them or to skirt their fleece to enter in a show. If we are unable to answer your questions, we can help you find someone who can.
If you are interested in happy, healthy alpacas and caring, helpful after the sale support, give us a call and come out and visit us. We're tucked away in a little-known corner of Ohio, so it may take a little longer to get here, but we can make it worth the trip!
